Stockton is the 13 th largest city in California and was founded by Captain Charles Maria Weber when he decided to start gold mining. This city was the first in California to have an English name instead of Spanish or Native American and was officially incorporated in 1850.
With a population of approximately 290,000, Stockton is also the fifth largest inland city in California. Like most cities in California, the economy of Stockton is dependant on tourism and agriculture. While Stockton is a farming city, it is also culturally diverse in the true nature of California. Stockton is home to the third oldest professional orchestra in California, The Stockton Symphony Orchestra.
Culture and education has been very important to residents of Stockton over the years and this dedication is evident in the many museums and educational institutions present in the city. With a reputation that matches most large cities in California, Stockton has been used in the making of dozens of major motion pictures and many other performances.
Stockton is one place that you can find the excitement of “Hollywood” and “Los Angeles”, with housing prices far below the averages of those cities. Housing prices have dropped tremendously in Stockton due to the collapse of sub-prime lending in 2007 and lead the country in foreclosures with one out of every thirty homes being posted for foreclosure.
